daylight

The Pixel 8a sports a 64MP primary camera with an aperture size of f/1.89 and 80-degree FOV (field of view), while the Pixel 8 sports a 50MP primary lens with an aperture size of f/1.68 and 82-degree FOV. Both cameras capture excellent daylight shots with good detail, dynamic range, and contrast. However, the Pixel 8 offers slightly better dynamic range and captures a wider frame thanks to its greater FOV.

Details are also slightly better in the Pixel 8, and if you focus on the building at the back, you can see some white lines, which are not readily apparent in the Pixel 8a's image. Another significant difference is in colour reproduction, the Pixel 8a leans towards warmer colours while the Pixel 8 prefers cooler colour tones, which can be easily seen in the images. The Pixel 8 wins in the image comparison in daylight.

the winner: Pixel 8

Ultrawide

The Pixel 8a has a 13MP ultrawide lens with an aperture size of f/2.2 and a 120-degree FOV. In comparison, the Pixel 8 has a 12MP ultrawide lens with the same aperture size but a 125-degree FOV. Comparing both the shots, the difference between them once again comes in the form of colour reproduction, with the Pixel 8a's image having a warmer tone while the Pixel 8's image is on the cooler side.

The level of detail is almost the same in both the images, and the same is true for dynamic range. Despite having a larger FOV, the Pixel 8's image captures comparatively fewer frames than the Pixel 8a. The ultrawide comparison ends in a tie.

the winner: tie

Picture

There are some big differences right away in portrait shots. The Pixel 8a delivers excellent edge detection in its portrait shots, while the Pixel 8's edge detection is a little weaker, with blur around the subject's frame. The Pixel 8a isn't perfect either, and there's noticeable blur in some areas, such as the left side of the subject, but it's comparatively better than the Pixel 8.

The skin texture is quite good in both the phones and there is no softening in it. The color reproduction is the same in both. Talking about portrait shots, Pixel 8a wins.

the winner: Pixel 8a

Selfie

Although the Pixel 8a has a higher-resolution selfie camera, its results are inferior to the Pixel 8. The Pixel 8's selfie images are more detailed, which is easily noticeable when comparing skin texture. The Pixel 8a smooths the skin a bit, while the Pixel 8 keeps it intact. The subject's hair and the trees behind them are also more detailed in the Pixel 8's images compared to the Pixel 8a.

the winner: Pixel 8

Low Light

In low light, we tested the camera prowess of both phones without enabling Night mode. The difference between the results is quite evident as the Pixel 8's image is clearly more detailed. There are a lot more individual strands and textures present in the fur in the Pixel 8's image, which are mostly smooth in the Pixel 8a's image. The area around the nose is also more detailed in the Pixel 8's image. The Pixel 8 thus delivers better results in low light.

the winner: Pixel 8

Low light (night mode enabled)

With Night mode enabled, the Pixel 8a's image has slightly better dynamic range, which you can see by the focus on the carpet next to the bed and the wooden texture of the bed. Since the Pixel 8a prefers warmer colors, the scene seems more illuminated than the Pixel 8's image.

However, when it comes to details, the Pixel 8 still has better fur textures, and its images are also sharper than the Pixel 8a. I have to give the win to the Pixel 8 because of its sharper images, which capture more details than the Pixel 8a.

the winner: Pixel 8

Decision

In our camera comparison, the Pixel 8 is the clear winner over the Pixel 8a. When it comes to daylight shots, the Pixel 8 outperforms the Pixel 8a with better details, dynamic range, and FOV. Even in low light, the Pixel 8 delivers better results than the Pixel 8a, which cements its win.

Although the Pixel 8a falls behind in our camera comparison, it still delivers great-looking photos when we pay attention to the finer details. On top of that, the Pixel 8a is significantly cheaper than the Pixel 8, so if you're looking for a good camera phone, the Pixel 8a won't disappoint.
