Shopping for a portable Bluetooth speaker can be a little daunting – the market is packed with a wide variety of features, feature sets, and price points. Not to mention the size: like the Woofit, there are speakers that fit your hand and require the use of your entire arm.

Herman Cordon Onyx turns to the latter, more suited to its volume and bass abilities. At $ 500 (around Rs,38000, AU $ 534), this unit falls squarely into the high-end segment of the portable speaker market. Still, the fact that it is more suitable for every day, in-house use adds little value.

Design

In the case of  Onyx, the big one is really beautiful. The speaker has a unique circular design tilted at a slight angle, filled with a high-touch of steel and leather. Instead, it is surrounded by an ergonomic (and durable) brushed steel handle unit covered with a removable cloth grille.

Removing the speaker’s grill reveals four transducers: two three-inch woofers and two three-fourth inch tweeters. Onyx also has dual passive radiators under the hood, which lend itself to a balanced sound profile.

Flipping the speaker around will leave the textured leather back with a circular silver label that will dance accordingly when you sing the song with heavy bass and give some pleasant visual feedback to those who like the low audio range.

At the bottom, there are ports for power and aux-in, as well as a USB 2.0 connection, which can be used to charge a portable device when plugged into speaker power. Here you can find the WPS button, an integrated way of connecting a speaker to your wireless network. (You can also do this via an iOS device, but more on that later.)

Onyx’s top-end features LED-backlit, touch-sensitive controls, including power key and volume controls, and Bluetooth and wireless buttons/indicators. It is very pleasing that you can run your finger between the “+” and “-” indicators to adjust the volume, the kind that hits the back of the cat – the one without the fur, that is.
