Xiaomi has expanded its product portfolio in India by introducing six new products at its Smarter Living 2021 launch event. The list of products includes the new Mi Band 5, Mi Smart LED Bulb (White), Mi Automatic Soap Dispenser, Mi Athlezer Shoes, and two completely new products for Indian consumers – the Mi Watch Revolve and the Google Assistant-Backed Me Smart Speaker.

The aforementioned products have been launched at a very aggressive price, especially when the Mi Smart speaker is introduced at an introductory price of just Rs. 3,499. We will talk more about the Mi Smart speaker and the new smartwatch in the coming days but today we are taking a closer look at the new Mi Band 5.

Price Rs. 2,499, the successor of the Mi Band 4 brings you a large and bright AMOLED display, a new charging setup, and a number of new features related to health to help you lead a healthy lifestyle.

Could This Be Your First Budget Fitness Tracker? Let’s find out.

Mi Band 5 is reminiscent of its past. It has the same sporty look and feels but a bigger and brighter display and a bit more dynamic design. The Mi Band 5 features a 1.1-inch 126 x 294 resolution AMOLED touchscreen that is bright enough for a maximum brightness of 450 nits. This is the best touch screen for a budget fitness tracker at this price. The colors look vibrant and the text is easy to read, even in bright sunlight, thanks to good screen real estate and enhanced by brightness.

The most significant and welcome change to the new charging setup is that it makes the design more practical for everyday routines. The Mi Band 5 features a hassle-free magnetic charging setup, which means you don’t need to extract the capsule from the silicon straps to refuel the battery. The bundled magnetic charger plugs directly into the bottom of the capsule, just like the premium Samsung Galaxy Fit-series health bands.

The Mi Band 5 looks premium on the wrist and has a very sturdy design. Like the Mi Band 4, the new Fitness Tracker 5 has an ATM waterproof rating (50m water resistance) which means you can wear it while you swim without worrying about any performance issues. Xiaomi has added some new colors to the list. The Mi Band 5 is available in 5 strap color options – Black, Teal, Purple, Navy Blue, and Orange.

Mi Band 5 Health and Fitness Features

Despite being a budget fitness tracker, the Mi Band 5 is packed with sensors and health-focused features to help you keep up with your daily fitness regimes. Fitness Tracker features 11 professional sports modes, including indoor and outdoor activities such as walking, running, rowing machine, jump rope, and a new yoga tracking mode. The band has a heart rate monitor to provide 24-hour continuous heart rate and sleep monitoring. I am excited to test the performance of the new sensors, as Xiaomi says, these monitors respond better with improved PPG biosensors.

Also, Mi Band 5 can check your stress levels by giving warnings and tips for relaxation. Xiaomi has also added an all-new women’s health tracking setup that records all the ruptures (stages of ovulation) and provides timely reminders.

Mi Band 5 specifications, features and claimed battery life

The Mi Band 5 has 16GB of internal memory and 512kb of RAM. It uses Bluetooth 5.0 to connect to smartphones running Android 5.0 and above and iOS 10.0 and higher. Customized watch faces, music and camera control, mobile phone search, muted mobile phone (for Android system only), notification support (call, message, app, calendar, etc.), weather forecast, timer, alarm, and charging status.

In terms of battery life, the fitness band is controlled by a 125 mAh battery cell, which is said to enable 2 weeks of battery life in normal mode and 3 weeks of battery life with power-saving mode. The company mentions that the magnetic charger takes about 2-hours to refuel a 125 mAh battery cell, which is a bit too long for such a small battery unit. In our comprehensive review of the band, we examine the company’s claims on battery life.

Should You Buy a New Mi Band 5?

Price Rs. 2,499, Mi Band 5 seems like the perfect budget fitness band for new users and Mi Band 4 users looking for an upgrade. The new band has a bigger and brighter full touchscreen, with the same sturdy but more functional design, thanks to the new magnetic charging setup. In addition, it is loaded with useful new fitness features. As a daily fitness band, we still spend some time testing the Mi Band 5 to determine its real-life performance.
